Apollo 11 moon landing anniversary
20th July 1969

50 years ago...... mankind slipped the surly bonds of earth
And 2 men stepped onto another body in our solar system

Our greatest achievement?
Or just a very big boy's toy?

I'm just too young to remember it for real unfortunately.

Re: Apollo 11 moon landing anniversary
The actual mechanics and science of the moonlanding were little more than a vanity project. The direct benefits to mankind have not been that great.

Sure it is part of our development but other steps have been far more significant

E.g
DNA Sequencing
World Wide Web

To name but two different yet more signifigant steps for man than walking on the moon

I saw Appolo 11 in its hangar parked on the transporter when I was 4. My Dad was on a sabbatical in Miami in 1969. It is one one of the few things I remember from that year. My parents made a point of taking my brother and I there as it was important.

Easthammer - some mountains have to be climbed - just because they are there. Sometimes - The art of the thing is more important than the science sir.

Open your mind.

Re: Apollo 11 moon landing anniversary
+ the publicity of putting a man on the moon green lit and bank rolled all the subsequent space missions & achievements that came with that and the space programme generally.

It was a gateway mission bruv. A landmark in human endeavour. Can you dig it?
Can you dig it?

Man will always have a fascination with space, and space travel. I know I certainly do.

I just hope I’m around long enough to see it happen again.

I like to think my mind is still at my age very open. It is also attuned to answering a question as set..Had the question been was the moonlanding an exciting piece of daring do I might have supplied an answer which met with your approval. As a quick but careful read of the opening post will confirm it didn't I shant take your reproach to heart.

At the risk of sounding like a contrarian, I'm going to have to differ with the OP.

Specifically;
"50 years ago...... mankind slipped the surly bonds of earth(sic)"

Mankind had already done that in 1961.

East - genuinely wasnt meant as a reproach sir.
Zeb - quality tune & vid! A million such memories for millions of people -that was its beauty! Listen also to Brian Enos Apollo Atmospheres & Soundtracks. Like floating in space

zebthecat 1:14 - That is fucking amazing!

I watched the docu Sunday night (I think it was) about the build up and preparation, I still find it unbelievable!
I'm not a skeptic though, Just the sheer manpower, mathematics, engineering etc in those times needed to achieve it.

Antly, not really, Gagarin was orbiting the Earth, still under its gravitational influence, you could argue Apollo 8 was the first to "slip the surly bonds" of Earth?

Ronald_antly 7:45 Tue Jul 16
Re: Apollo 11 moon landing anniversary
If you want to REALLY split hairs, then one can argue that man has NEVER escaped the Earth's gravity, given that we've only been as far as the Moon.

Allegedly.
